Peggy's Picks: Winnipeg Folk Festival Pt. 1

The 45th annual Winnipeg Folk Festival kicks off in just 3 short days. If you hadn’t already worked it into your summer plans, you’re going to want to consider it. Here’s why: It’s a short drive from the city (or take the shuttle from downtown), there’s everything you could want in a summer mini-getaway including a beach, great food, local beverages and a market and most importantly the MUSIC.

This year’s lineup, announced back in March, offers a variety of performers that all fall somewhere within the genres of roots, folk and traditional, but let’s be honest, the lines are always somewhat blurred, in the best kind of way. This year, you will find traces of soul, funk, rock and more. One thing is for sure about Folk Fest, and that is you will most certainly come across some artists you’re not that familiar with. The good folks at the fest have put a lot of work into their website so that you can listen to a specially curated playlist, or feature track for each artist.

Over the next few days we’ll share some of our favourite picks and maybe you’ll even find a new musical crush.

THURSDAY – ELLE KING

You might know her as: The Ex’s and Oh’s or Under the Influence singer. You might even know her as Rob Schneider’s daughter (she made a cameo alongside her dad in 1999’s Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo).

A few facts you might not know:

Her full name is Tanner Elle Schneider – she takes her stage name from her middle name and her mother’s maiden name.

She plays banjo and guitar and her musical style ranges from country to rock, soul and blues.

Her song Good Girls was featured on the new Ghostbusters soundtrack and Playing For Keeps is the theme song for Mob Wives Chicago.

She was featured on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” in February 2017.

Elle King plays on the Main Stage at 8:10 pm.

A full festival pass is $254, a single day pass for Thursday is $75.
